Why You Should Let Your Mind Wander

When was the last time you travelled without headphones or went to sleep simply letting your thoughts wander?

Well, we all travel. Some of us travel daily for work, some for studies, and some for other reasons. But how many of us actually keep our headphones away, turn off the music, and just travel?

Not just travelling to reach somewhere, but actually being there. Watching everything around us, noticing the little things, looking outside the window, watching people, the changing landscapes, the sky, the rain and everything else.

And more importantly, letting our thoughts wander.

Not thinking about today's pending work, what to eat, what needs to be done tomorrow or any of those usual things. Just random thoughts. Maybe remembering something that happened years ago, a conversation with someone, a funny incident, or even something completely unrelated.

One thought leads to another, and before you know it, you've travelled through a whole bunch of memories.

When was the last time you actually did that?

If you haven't, maybe give it a try.

Well, talking about letting our thoughts wander, remember how we used to fall asleep when we were younger?

We wouldn't just go to bed and immediately sleep because we were tired. We'd lie down, probably stare at the ceiling, and start thinking about all sorts of random things.

It could be something that happened at school, a fight with a friend, what we had for dinner, something we saw that day, or even some imaginary scenarios that made absolutely no sense.

And we'd keep thinking. One thought after another, sometimes even talking to ourselves in our heads.

But at some point, without even realising it, we'd fall asleep. We only got to know that when we woke up the next morning.

And somehow, those mornings felt different. We'd wake up feeling refreshed and energetic, almost like having a strong coffee. :)

But how about now?

We still sleep, don't we? But are we actually giving ourselves that little time to wander through our thoughts before falling asleep?

Some of us overwork ourselves. Some have hectic work lives, some spend hours travelling every day, and some have completely different routines that leave them exhausted by the end of the day.

We reach our beds, and all we want is to sleep. Sometimes we even make ourselves tired enough so that we don't have to think about anything anymore.

And that's where I think we should pause for a moment.

Are we actually falling asleep after letting our minds relax, wandering through the little moments of our day? Or are we just exhausting ourselves enough to fall asleep?

There's a difference, right?

Well, I'm someone who tends to collect all my valli's (unwanted works) and keep myself occupied. There's always something to work on, something to build, something to learn or something that keeps me engaged.

Maybe partly because I enjoy being occupied, but also because I don't always want to let my thoughts wander too much and turn into overthinking.

And I guess many of us do that in different ways. We keep ourselves busy, put on some music, scroll through our phones, watch something or find something else to occupy our minds.

But maybe we've reached a point where we don't even know how to spend a few minutes without doing something.

So, here's a little thought.

The next time you're travelling, try keeping your headphones away for a while. Don't immediately reach for your phone either. Just be there. Watch what's happening around you, listen to the sounds, look outside and let your thoughts take their own direction.

And before going to sleep, maybe don't rush to exhaust yourself with one last scroll or another episode. Give yourself some time. Lie down, think about the day, remember those little moments, and let one thought lead to another.

And no, I'm not talking about overthinking your problems, worrying about tomorrow's work or replaying everything that went wrong.

I'm talking about those random thoughts. Those little moments where your mind wanders without any particular destination.

Maybe it's time we bring that back.

We don't always have to keep ourselves occupied. We don't always need music playing in the background or something happening on our screens. Sometimes, just being with ourselves is enough. And maybe, rather than tiring ourselves out just to fall asleep, we could let our thoughts wander until sleep naturally takes over.

Who knows, maybe we'll wake up feeling a little more refreshed too.

So, just check in with yourself. When was the last time you actually let your thoughts wander?
